MEMORIES OF UNKNOWN
MEMORIES OF UNKNOWN is a spatial installation curated by Charlotte Paulus and Fabian Freytag as part of CURRENTS and BERLIN ART WEEK. Set within the iconic Pan Am Lounge, the installation creates a fictional living space between memory and imagination, between art and design.
The starting point of the installation is the apartment of an unknown inhabitant – a place filled with traces, stories and personal memories. Visitors enter a world where objects become storytellers and spaces unfold their own narratives. Furniture, materials, light, artworks and carefully curated details merge into an atmosphere that feels familiar while leaving room for interpretation: Who lived here? Which moments took place within these walls? What is memory, and what is fiction?
The curatorial concept brings together the language of design with selected artworks from the collection of GRISEBACH. In collaboration with renowned design partners, the installation creates an immersive narrative about the myth of travel, the spirit of past eras and the power of spaces to preserve and reinvent stories.
The Pan Am Lounge provides the perfect setting for this experience. As part of Berlin’s architectural and cultural history, the location embodies the spirit of the Jet Age, international encounters and the dream of global connectivity. Once a symbol of elegance, modernity and the fascination of flying, the lounge represents the unique atmosphere of a time when travel itself became a lifestyle. MEMORIES OF UNKNOWN reinterprets this heritage through a contemporary dialogue between past and present.
