Schloss Bellevue – A Resonant Place
FABIAN FREYTAG STUDIO was one of ten selected architecture and design studios invited to participate in a competition for the redesign of the interiors of Schloss Bellevue, the official residence and seat of the German Federal President. Our proposal understands Schloss Bellevue as a resonant space shaped by its history.
Rather than overwriting its layers of time, the design builds upon them. Representation is reinterpreted not as a gesture of power, but as an expression of sovereignty, openness and hospitality.
The starting point is the ellipse – a recurring element within the architecture of the palace. A form without beginning or end, it becomes the connecting principle of the design and a subtle metaphor for the democratic process.
From this geometry, forms emerge that evoke open books – an architectural reference to Germany’s Basic Law. The motif becomes a discreet design language, appearing across wall panelling, carpets, furniture and curtains.
The result is a contemporary interpretation of Schloss Bellevue that respects the character and history of the building while making it feel more open, welcoming and future-oriented.
